The Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing) Postgraduate Diploma is a 2-year part-time program that leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Program Overview

The program aims to equip students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills required to work as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in school nursing. Students will learn how to conduct assessments, surveillance, and interventions utilizing validated tools in specialist practice and explore and apply contemporary theory to a range of biopsychosocial and challenging situations surrounding infant/child, parents, and carers.

Modules

The program consists of the following modules:

• Public Health Practice Across the Life Course (20 Credits): This module focuses on developing critical knowledge and appreciation of the changing patterns of populations, communities, and people through adopting a life course approach to meet the public health agenda.
• Assessment, Surveillance, and Intervention for Specialist Public Health Practice (40 Credits): This module teaches students how to conduct assessments, surveillance, and interventions utilizing validated tools in specialist practice.
• Transforming Community Specialist Practice through Research, Policy, Evidence, and Evaluation (30 Credits): This module develops the ability to interpret and apply critical knowledge and appreciation of epidemiological research, informatics, and contemporary public health policy.
• Advancing Public Health Services Through Leadership (30 Credits): This module focuses on leadership and service improvement, providing students with the opportunity to explore an area of contemporary specialist practice.
• Academic Language Skills (ALS) for PG Nursing and Midwifery students (Core – for International and EU students only, 0 Credits): This module supports international and EU students in developing their academic language skills.

Research-Rich Learning

The program embeds research-rich learning throughout, culminating in a dissertation that allows students to explore a topic of their choice in significant depth. Students will have the option to conduct an empirical study, undertaking hands-on research supported by tutors with specialist knowledge in that area.

Career Opportunities

After successfully completing the program, students will be recognized as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse on the third part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council register. They will also receive a Postgraduate Diploma from Northumbria University. The program prepares students for practice in exactly the way employers are seeking, ensuring consistently high employment rates.

Fees and Funding

The full UK fee for the 2025/26 entry is £6,466, and the full international fee is £12,900. There are also additional costs associated with the program, including the cost of purchasing a fob watch and suitable footwear for use in placement, travel costs, and parking charges.

Study Options

The program is available on a part-time basis, with a September start. There are also other study options available, including a full-time option.
